The final application was submitted to the State Banking Department on April 12, 1963. The following individuals signed the application: Frank Beckum, Lamar Christian, Dr. I.M. Funderburg, Frank Gleason, R.B. Howard, Sanford E. Leake, Preston Morgan, T.J. Patrick, Sr., Harry Weill and William B. Woods. Total capital was set at $350,000. The charter was granted on July 1, 1963. On August 28, 1963, Frank Gleason was appointed Chairman and J.J. Atkins was named President. Additionally, R.B. Howard was elected Vice President. All three gentlemen were appointed to serve on the Board as well. The other elected Directors were T.A. Cochran, Harry Weill, T.J. Patrick, Sr. and Sanford E. Leake. Gordon Nichols was appointed as the bank's Cashier. The bank opened for business on December 13, 1963, and reported $218,000 in deposits at the close of the first day. In February 1964, a new President, Jim Palmer, was retained and added to the Board as well, while Mr. Patrick moved into the Chairman's position. The Chattanooga Valley Branch was constructed in 1971 after several local residents and businesses requested the facility to accommodate the growth in that area. It was alternately used as a full service branch and drive-thru only until 1984, when a major remodeling was completed. It was opened as a full service branch after the remodeling and remains a vibrant part of the bank. Two significant events occurred in 1983. George E. Calfee acquired controlling interest in May of that year and became Chairman, and Charles R. Lusk was hired as the bank's new President and CEO to replace the retiring Mr. Palmer. Mr. Lusk began serving in this capacity in September of that year. When Mr. Calfee suddenly passed away in 1986, his widow, Mrs. Bernice Sale, was elected Chairman by the shareholders and continues in that position today, helping to make Rossville Bank one of the dominant community banks in the Northwest Georgia area. The bank has experienced substantial growth through the years resulting in several expansions and remodeling of the original Main Office. The latest of these occurred in 1995 with the acquisition of three adjacent tracts of real estate and the construction of the new Drive-Thru facility in 1996. Georgia banking laws were changed in 1997 to allow branching beyond the county borders of ones main office. This opportunity for expansion into an excellent market was acted upon after an extensive marketing study. Subsequently, the Catoosa County Branch was constructed, opening for business on October 3, 1999. Tremendous progress has been made to date. The branch has experienced growth and profitability far exceeding the original expectations. ![]()
